A Chiropractor Can Treat Knee Pain

Posted on: July 16, 2018

There are many sources of knee pain. A chiropractor can help determine the cause and provide you with relief. Chiropractors work to treat and heal ailments with natural methods, focusing on the person as a whole, rather than solely treating the problem itself. They provide this care with as little medication as possible, choosing to instead work with the person’s body through manual manipulations and stretching exercises to heal conditions and restore proper musculoskeletal mechanics and posture.

Common causes of knee pain

Knee pain may be a result of an injury, overuse or poor posture. Each of these causes can be treated by chiropractic care alone or in combination with surgery or other medical treatment.

1. ACL tears

ACL tears are one huge source of knee pain. There are 150,000 to 200,000 ACL injuries reported every year, according to Health Research Funding (https://healthresearchfunding.org/acl-injury-statistics/). Whether it is an old injury that has resulted in stiff and sore knees or a new injury that a patient is trying to work through rather than seeking out surgical treatment, chiropractic care can provide some relief. The anterior cruciate ligament is one of four ligaments in the knee joint that provides stability to the knee and helps coordinate movement of the leg. Because of the stability properties of the ACL, a chiropractor can help treat ACL tears by examining and treating other mechanical anatomical components of the body, like the back, hips and ankles, that may attribute to stress on the injured or healing ACL. Treatment may also include inflammation reduction to improve range of motion.

2. Tendonitis

Tendonitis is a common source of pain for many people. Tendonitis results from the inflammation of the tendons around and in the knee. In most cases, tendonitis is caused by overuse or poor body mechanics. Chiropractic care will help the patient relearn proper body mechanics and teach the patient how to allow their body time to rest and recoup after times of extensive, aggravating use.

3. Illiotibial band syndrome

Illiotibial band syndrome (or IT band) is another common cause of knee pain. Pain associated with this condition is typically experienced on the outside of the knee, extending from the hips to the upper shin. The IT band is a long band of connective tissue that runs along the outside of the upper leg. Due to improper body mechanics and posture problems, the band can become tight and cause pain and poor form when using the legs and hips to perform motions. Chiropractic care for this problem will involved realigning the whole body.

4. Other issues

Meniscal tears, osteoarthritis, bursitis, runner's knee and aging are other frequently diagnosed and treated knee issues. Bending down, walking up and down stairs, sitting, exercising, standing for long periods of time and other normal activities of daily living can all contribute to knee pain. Because of this, knee complaints are commonly seen at chiropractic clinics, and fortunately, they are very treatable.
